Media literacy in primary school: new challenges in the digital age

Abstract

today there are heated debates in the world about the major changes and immense advances that technology has made possible in our societies. Digital divide, digital skills, information and knowledge society, resource inequality, etc. These are all concepts that inevitably emerge when reflecting on what is happening in our environment with technological development. This is all the more so if we analyse in depth how these changes are having an impact on the education of our offspring. Despite the fact that this new digital environment offers great opportunities and new possibilities to build knowledge, our society urgently needs different strategies within its education system to ensure adequate training in the digital age. This work puts particular emphasis on how important it is for children in this emerging society to learn to find, assess and use the information available on the web through digital literacy from primary education onwards. To help with this purpose, the results of a Connected Digital Literacy Project are also presented using a specific tool: the iPad. With this facility, the project aims to improve the digital skills of children from the age of 7-8, who are already internet users.
