Web 2.0 and museums: the new faces of the visitor

Abstract

International audience The increasing integration of techniques from Web 2.0 bythe museums illustrates the profound changes that thesestructures have realized in building their relationship withthe audience. The use of these devices, based on a logic ofparticipation, leads to involve the visitor, traditionally ra-ther kept at a distance, on all stages of the implementationof the museum offered on Internet. Through a careful exa-mination of sites and features offered by the museal struc-tures, different roles now devolved to the public have beenidentified. The emergence of these new “faces” of the visitorcomes to question, in the longer-term, about the identity andthe legitimacy of the museums themselves.
