The field of eurocracy The field of eurocracy: Sociology of EU political staff

Abstract

International audience Eurocracy: the word appears in all the European Union languages and alphabets. But beyond the more or less fantasized representations this word carries, what do we know about members of the European Parliament, commissioners, European civil servants, lobbyists and interest representatives, members of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, CEO's (or managers) and trade unionists, militaries and diplomats, commentators, who, within or closely linked to the EU institutions, embodies it ? What are their career paths, their social and professional trajectories, the type of authority they possess or they are aiming at, and where does Europe stand here? Finally, how does the collective they all form together structure itself in its diversity as well as in its relative sociological unity? First book this exhaustive on this population, this collective contribution aims at answering these questions by mobilizing the original reasoning which, in the US as in the EU, renew the European integration approaches using the notion of social field. Useful to both professionals of Europe and citizens, this book shatters the classical representation of the EU institutions and sheds new light on the relational structures of their functioning.
