Abstract
International audience The Testament of Theodore Studites (759-826) played a great role in Greek monasticism (BHG 1759). However, a careful analysis reveals that the text is made of various pieces written by Theodore at different moments of time, and that theses pieces have probably been put together after his death, when Theodore's followers were concerned about organizing his legacy. Naukratios, head of the studite monks from 821 to 869, must have played a key role in this process. For the sake of the demonstration, the following elements are examined: the structure of Testament itself, parallels with Naukratios' Encyclica, biographical details as they appear in Theodore's Catecheseis, as well as the manuscript context in which the Testament has been preserved. A critical edition of the text will follow in another issue of this journal.
