Localized agrifood systems : products, agricultural business and local dynamics

Abstract

national audience Les SYAL refers to a form of organisation and a local development process based on a spatial concentration of agri-food units (farms, agri-food companies, service, marketing, catering companies) that enables them to structure themselves around a common activity. The current process of globalisation and changes in political, economic and social terms (decentralisation, subcontracting, etc.) have attracted increasing interest in these forms of production, testimony to the development of research on local production systems in industry or services. However, the agri-food sector has at least two characteristics that deserve a specific SPL approach. Downstream of this sector, food is the only consumer good that consumers ‘incorporate’. Food is thus of vital importance, as individuals and societies seek to rebuild identities and affiliations around the forms of their food consumption. Prior to the development of agriculture and rural areas, questions are also raised: the concept of multifunctionality tries to reflect the complex nature of the role of agriculture today. Jobs, the reproduction of rural social fabric, environmental problems and new demands for food quality are all challenges that need to be addressed. The concept of ‘local agri-food systems’ therefore refers to the emergence of agri-food development models based on the enhancement of local resources (products, knowledge, skills, businesses, institutions), which are more attentive to the diversity and quality of agricultural and food products, are more concerned with local development dynamics and new rural challenges, and are more capable of developing specific forms of interaction with consumers. This is a concept to be clarified and built between the various social actors and disciplinary approaches involved. This symposium is an opportunity to compare the results of teams and researchers in technical and social sciences, whose work can help to structure the production of knowledge on SYAL. The results of the planned thematic action of CIRAD “Syal and Spatial Building” (1999-2001), as well as the INRA-SAD project PIDAL-INRA (innovation process in local agri-food development) will be part of the contributions to this colloquium. This document brings together the summaries of the communications presented at the Colloquium.
