Abstract
The “pygmy” Aka hunter-gatherers have developed a lifestyle based on displacements, which structure their technical, economic and social organisation. Their mobility depends on their relationships with the other communities of the same forest. In this article, we shall briefly describe the Aka’s organisation, by situating it in a chronological framework, and taking into account the previous periods, including colonial times. In comparison with other communities of hunter-gatherers and farmers in central Africa, we shall try to point out the structuring elements in the economy of the forest societies. Finally, we shall demonstrate how the contemporary constraints, which essentially aim to prevent the Aka from moving, are based both on a lack of understanding of their lifestyle and a true denial of their logic.
