Professor Jean-Martin Charcot: on his life and work with regard to the biographies and titles of the French great press following his death in August 1893

Abstract

In this thesis we wanted to present a summary of the life and works of Professor Jean-Martin Charcot first holder of the “Clinic of Nervous System Diseases” (Neurology) Chair, by rereading the few biographies published of him. Beyond the references related to the History of Medicine, we also wanted to comment and examine the articles of the Parisian Press on the day of the funeral of the “Master” so that we can try to consider the continuity of interest that the Press showed in this person in his lifetime. The 19th century Press orchestrated the “noise” of its time as well as imparted and denied glory with equal quickness. What about the representation of the life and works of Professor Jean-Martin Charcot? In the light of hagiography, the formal look of his contemporaries and the daily pittance of an opportunistic Press, we tried to summarize in a very modest and partial way what kind of information the records bring to us nowadays on the fate of a man and on his destiny built on fortuitous events, pugnacity as well as sharp and exemplary scientific acumen.
