Abstract
Summary Ageing population age structure is the result of a combination of low fecundity, mortality and migration. This demographic behaviour has an impact on different sectors of social life and, more particularly, on the family, where in most cases there is a change in the structure of the family and in the roles of each of its members. Due to the importance of this phenomenon, this research has brought the issue of the family and its ageing closer together. In addition, demographic ageing was analysed in the province of Holguín, demonstrating that it is the oldest province of the Cuban region. On the other hand, it was concluded that older people should continue to carry out their family activities, regardless of their employment relationship, depending on their preferences and health status; which do not limit their life course and make them worthwhile; and that communication is essential for family members to fulfil their roles without affecting ageing.
