Instead of God: Jean-Luc Marion, Augustin reader

Abstract

Marion’s interpretation of Augustine, based on his reading of the Confessiones, is a topology of charity (that is, also, a topic or a logic of Love) : it offers at the same time a theology of the « gifted » (adonné) and a phenomenology of grace. We first set out Marion’s most important claims and expound his main concepts, then disclose and vindicate the theological background of the alleged third way between the transcendental « I » and the empirical « ego » : precisely Augustine’s Gifted’s way, incompatible with any aristotelian notion of the subject. We argue that Marion’s interpretation is firmly rooted in Augustine’s spiritual reading of the Psalms. It is thus based neither on an heideggerian Es gibt nor on an anticartesian Es denkt. It is also at variance with Étienne Gilson’s views. As such, it successfully breaks through metaphysics, i.e. the Metaphysics of Exodus as well as the Metaphysics of conversion, and confirms a negative, apophatic understanding of the Idipsum (« Itself ») as the most proper name of God.
