The impact of Covid-19 on informal trade in the canton of Portoviejo, province of Manabí

Abstract

The health crisis that led to the arrival of COVID-19 has brought about far-reaching changes in all areas. In terms of the labour market, economic activity has fallen significantly, resulting in the closure of many workplaces. Informal trade does not escape it, being the most affected as their subsistence income depends on daily sales of their goods. The general purpose of this investigation is therefore to analyse the impact of Covid-19 on informal trade in Canton Portoviejo, Province of Manabí; the study is described as descriptive, non-experimental and quantitatively. The research population is 1001 informal shops distributed in the Portoviejo Canton, with a sample of 278. The questionnaire was used to collect the information in this study. This technique led to the conclusion that in a large part of the informal shops located on the market number 1, they had significant sales during 2019, despite the economic situation of Ecuador and the poor purchasing power of the population, their businesses are dealt with by families who opt for this alternative to informal trade, and most informal traders have chosen to use functional strategies to go ahead with their business, such as offering products at lower prices, virtual shop, home delivery, business at home, all of this in order to maintain their sales since they depend on their daily income to survive.
