Abstract
summary The aim of this article is to investigate what administrative and technical discipline has evolved, or as an episteme, in the Latin American context. It is suggested that the Latin American theory of the administration faces a double problem: epistemological, due to its lack of consistency and internal coherence, and sociological, because its conceptual system consists of technical approaches, linked to world-wide pragmatic rationalistic production processes; this administrative theory is based on economic liberalism, on managerial models originating in the dominant form of Europe and the United States, as well as on Japan. It also seeks to describe briefly where alternative administration research agendas are directed to overcoming this obstacle, by conceptualising the role that companies and organisations play in our societies.
