Social classes, revolution and development: institutional theory.

Abstract

institutions are determined by power at national and international society level. They reflect a crucial triadic structure: I — subject instrument — subject matter. At the social level: elite — middle class — poor class. At international level: elite countries — middle class countries — poor countries. Interactions of social classes and classes of countries are based on mutual utility extraction, reflecting differences in power in terms of capital, amount of interactions, imposition of national and international institutions, policy decisions. The initial utility of elites and countries determines inequality structures and enhances the accumulation of capital, knowledge, science and technology. The revolution is possible provided that it engages the middle class and the middle class is closer by preferences and income to the poor. The revolution must improve the usefulness of middle and poor classes, but costs fall mostly over the middle class. The middle class is more willing to sustain the power structure of elites than to change them, due to the great utility it draws from the elites’ capital and investment. A successful revolution is evidenced by institutional change, capable of shifting power from the elite to the other classes.
