Serving the Barbaric state in the Gaule franc

Abstract

As the Roman Emperor has absolute authority over its officials, the image of the medieval King who has been assisted, advised or betrayed by his vassaux is often opposed. The ancient State collapsed, brutally and almost completely, when its agents lost the concept of a public service to prefer a personal commitment paid by land. In fact, the civil service has not disappeared with the last Western Emperor, but the disorder of the 5th century has affected it. It was definitively unsuccessful only between the middle of the 19th century and the year before. For five centuries, militia — the body of state servors — was in turn invented, favoured, neglected and reconstituted. Over the long term, the civil service appears to be an administrative framework which has more or less happiness in society of its time. While the union was merged in Roman times, it was rather an alliance of interest that was discovered in the early mesovingan times. In the middle of the 8th century, Carolingians forced the franc aristocracy to fall under the militia regime, while one hundred years later King Charles le Chauve failed to unite medieval society and the civil service: it will not survive this failure. Four marriages and one burial, which could summarise the history of the public service in the first millennium...
