Abstract
This article aims to stimulate reflection on the introduction of a sustainability perspective in the new ICT-based information and knowledge societies characterised by globalisation that is far from inclusive. It involves building a global system that promotes the pursuit of environmental quality, social justice and a fair and viable economy in the long term. UNESCO has identified three basic ways to achieve this: governance, education and ethics. Governance can lead to fair social connectivity, changes in production and consumption patterns and the search for and implementation of real solutions to socio-environmental problems. Education can lead to continuous training of people who are critical, responsible and committed to attitudes of respect and harmony with the natural and social environment; international bodies such as the OECD, the United Nations and governments through the development of their education systems have been shaping the competency training model, among which competences for sustainability are considered key. This is based on ethical approaches that guide human capabilities to think, act and promote the defence of life on our planet.
