Announce, listen, understand: messages and biblical messengers in the Gotic Translation of Wulfila

Abstract

The biblical texts offer a particular focus on the themes of the message, messenger and embassy, giving these figures and themes an extraordinary dimension: messengers are entrusted with missions that connect two different worlds, one, the divin world; the other, the world of land, that of men. The purpose of the missions thus goes to the extreme: on the one hand, it is necessary to announce “extraordinary” events and, on the other hand, to be understood — or not to be understood — as in the case of Say, for example, if this is the draft of the body sending the messenger, God. All phases of missions — delivering the message, being heard, being understood by those to whom the message is addressed — then have a particular dimension. The language is shown to play its part fully in this transmission of a meaning that often goes beyond human understanding. The gotic of the Wulfila Bible will provide a particularly rich illustration here. The means (lexical, morphic) and the functions mobilised (anaphore, cataphore) which allow the expression of phrastic links to ensure the connection between the different phases of the mission, which begins with the sending of the messenger, are recorded. The role played by the particle ga- which, by ensuring the composition of the verbs ‘listening’ (gahausjan) and ‘see’ (gasaihvan) — thus starting them from their simple correspondents (hausjan and saihvan) — enables those compound verbs to express both the teleological purpose (the purpose of the tasks) and the legal purpose of the tasks, is particularly illuminated: that the message is truly understood, understood. The language is also used as an ambassador of the meaning.
