Abstract
`titrebNarcissism, individualism, autonomy : society and its discontents ?`/titrebMany studies point to the weakening or decline, even the end of submission to social obligation, in other words society’s loss of authority over individuals, along with the challenging of forms of collective solidarity. The double movement of the decline in social obligation and the decline in collective solidarity is said to be shown in a new symptomatology characterised by an unprecedented disorganisation of the individual personality by the yardstick of narcissism. We are said to have entered an individualism that no longer involves personalisation but unbinding. La Société du malaise [the uneasy society] compares this vision in seeking to describe the changes in the personal equation in a historical period characterised by the spread of the norms and values of autonomy to social life in general. The discussion develops some aspects of the book.
