Panique on TV: bacterial resistance seen by TV series -

Abstract

After a presentation of entertainment-education theory (created in the 1970s by Miguel Sabido) and the determination of the growing importance of antimicrobial resistance dangers, this article offers a study of the representation of superbugs through a corpus of 14 episodes from American primetime television series. The issue of antimicrobial resistance is dramatized (by using all the resources of audiovisual narrative) in each episode, but discourses are highly diverse and scattered. Even though they do not quite correspond to reality, they foster public awareness of the issue, allow the viewer to acquire pieces of knowledge (including through metaphors created by the writers), and develop a better understanding of public health issues. In that sense, they can be used to support the work of health promoters willing to enhance communication and education on antimicrobial resistance.
