Control of franchise networks

Abstract

The problem of monitoring franchising networks is clear, taking into account the specific nature of this type of network, the motivations and behaviour of the franchisor and franchisees and the various dimensions of the control implemented. An analysis of control within franchising networks has been developed, highlighting its various methods and their evolution over time. Exploratory research, based on interviews, is carried out among around ten franchisees and franchisors. The results seem to support the proposed representation. Proposals on the levers for monitoring franchising networks (compliance check, management control focused on operational efficiency and social control) are then set out and a comprehensive model is developed with several phases over the lifecycle of the franchise-franchised relationship (before the start of operations, at the start of operations, at the stabilisation phase of the operation, when the franchise contract is renewed and after).
