Economic and political transition

Abstract

The rapid transition strategy adopted by the Eastern countries since 1989 has been highly criticised; it has often been opposed to the Chinese path, which is known to be more gradual and capable of producing ‘gains without bread’. After recalling the elements of this debate, I propose to examine the subjective assessment, by the people of Eastern European countries, of their situation and of the changes they have experienced since 1989, with a fall of almost fifteen years.
