Plutarque’s delphic Philoophia

Abstract

There is no longer any doubt that Plutarque de Chéronée (~ 45-125) is a prominent figure in the history of platonism. The moral works contain several texts of vital importance for our understanding of the platonician philosophy at the imperial time. An astonishing thinker, however, Plutarque is not only a philosopher. Around 96, he accessed the dolphic lotrise, a highly honorary function. This meeting between the platonician philosopher and Delphes priest was reflected uniquely in a series of texts traditionally grouped together under the name of pythic Dialogues, including Sur l’E de Delphes, Sur les oracles de la Pythie and On the disappearance of oracles. This book attempts to analyse these pythic Dialogues, which puts at the forefront the logical and pythic nature of the texts. Each of the dialogues studied is indeed a joint research on a delphic reality. However, this research is not religious and Plutarque’s argument uses specifically platonician themes. This is a central feature of the pythic Dialogues that offer an unprecedented synthesis between the Delphes location and the platonician speech. The dolphic context allows Plutarca to question the gods and humans, as well as the intermediate figures between their two worlds, which make divination possible, the best expression of divine welfare. The reader sees Plutarque in constant dialogue with the rival doctrines of epicurism and stoicism, both in the sanctuary and in the argument. He then discovered texts where philosophy allowed a defence of sanctuary and where Delphes itself became a place for study, dialogue and philosophy. Thanks to the pythic Dialogues, the Delphes sanctuary is no longer just the centre of the world, it is also the centre of genuine philosophical wisdom.
