The complaint of the language in Argentina (1828-1928)

Abstract

The present argument seeks to demonstrate that Argentina’s identity training has largely been created from the complaint about the language we spoke in Argentina. This complaint consists of two periods: one signed by the need to acquire an emancipated cultural identity; another call to solve the linguistic problem from its strictly grammatical and empirical aspect. The first period conceived the “language issue” as a complaint with a political dimension; the second requested to convert it into a scientific matter, released from the fragor controversial. One is eminently ontological; the other wanted to be eminently linguistic. One was a dispute about our politicians, advertisers and poets; the other was reports and treated by filologists and lexicographs. Whether an Alberdi, a Gutiérrez, a Sarmiento is considered heroes for the former; the second is a Rufino J. Corps, a Rudolf Grossmann, an Alonso Amado. Of these two periods only their origins can be established; they are not yet concluded, nor are they completely annulled. The second joins the former and lives with it, even if it seeks to overcome it; the first brush because it is not acclimatised, even if it is sometimes hostile and about to close. They are not inexcusable blocks, nor do they lack cracks and leaks. The first began in 1828, with Juan Cruz Varela’s test on ‘National Literature’, and has its most characteristic motives during the nineteenth century. The second comes from the twentieth century, with the Argentinian national Idioma (1900), Lu100 Abeille, and its slides to date. Abeille can be seen as a hinge between the old way of studying languages — linked to the heritage of Romentism and decimonic science — and the new, already linguistic form, developed in Spain in the early 20th century and finds his patriarch in Ramón Menéndez Pidal. Although Abeille is not a member of this school, it is the first attempt to form a philological programme (including grammar and lexical) for the Argentinian language. These two periods, however, meant that the national language, the native language, the Argentine language, the Argentinian language, the alternative ways in which the same problem has always been raised were clarified as a common horizon: the issue of language in Argentina. Finally, the argument is made up of these two aspects, which, in the 1920s, come to its maximum expression. The starting point is 1828, because it is there that the first articles appear to me to be relevant. It concludes in 1928, one hundred years later, because it is the most active year of the complaint (four very important books are published this year), after which it is striking, as if it were the peace left behind the last stamped of a widespread battle.
