The issue of the method in contemporary pragmatism

Abstract

RESUMEN The discussion on the issue of the method marks one of the main points of disagreement between the two conflicting positions in contemporary pragmatism: linguistic neopragmatism and classical cun pragmatism focusing on experience. Although it is not entirely possible to overlook the context of the abovementioned debate in which the lack of mutual understanding between the parties blocks a productive conversation, I consider that the discussion on the question of the method can be examined separately. To that end, in the first section, I shall present John Dewey’s proposal which includes ‘experience as a method’ and I shall then assess Richard Rorty’s argument in favour of a ‘pragmatism without method’. I will argue that the pragmatic ‘experimental’ perspective of research can respond successfully to the Haitian criticism. In the second section, I have a presentation of the pragmatic methodological proposal in line with the perspective of Dewey, although I suggest that it is also compatible with neopragmatism, and I advocate that it is better understood as a metaphylosophical proposal on how to take forward and what the task of philosophical research should be.
