Teaching the history of the arts at primary school: on discovery of a new lever for a redesigned pedagogy

Abstract

The origin of the project in the history of the arts, set out in this document, was based on a finding: teaching the history of the arts, which has been compulsory since 2013 at primary school, does not take place. In order to answer the following question: why and how is it possible to put it in place and what pedagogy to adopt? A project implemented in a class of CM1 will be presented in such a way as to propose some avenues for reflection and to develop certain criteria which seem to be essential for this teaching, such as adopting a project approach in which the pupil is active or giving the time to experience of the sensitive, in particular through complementarity with the plastic arts. Finally, a section will be devoted to the special contribution of digital technology to the history of the arts (as a documentary source and a creative tool). In order to ensure that this teaching, whose need is no longer to be proven, can be carried out within the classroom and become a lever for a redesigned pedagogy.
