Reducing the use of antibiotics in livestock farming: would change come from women?

Abstract

for two years I have been working on the use of alternative herd health management methods by dairy cow farmers. Behind the qualification as an alternative, very different therapies are grouped together, such as homeopathy, phytotherapy, the use of essential oils or the OBSALIM ® dietary approach. The special role of women in animal care has come to me in the course of investigations on this subject. In Franche-Comté, I have been able to identify users of these alternative techniques via the lists of persons enrolled in training courses on animal health through contacts with organisations providing ongoing training in agriculture. In Normandy, it was a farming group that directly asked me to accompany a group of farmers trained in aromatherapy and wishing to open up to other alternative therapies. In both regions, however, I observed a significant presence of female farmers among the participants in these training courses. So far, I have not been able to go beyond this. In this ticket, I would like to reflect the similarities that appear in the professional trajectories of these women and to consider how these initial observations could be the subject of further developments in future surveys.
