Democratic training and democratic schools for the construction of critical citizenship

Abstract

This work develops a critical and socio-political reflection on the relationship between democracy, citizenship and education, based on the combination of theoretical inputs from the western world and the advances in current practice related to socio-political change processes in the Latin American and Caribbean continent. The concept of democracy and the forms of social, political and economic organisation from the perspective of conventional democratic conceptions are debated, but always looking at the horizon of revolutionary democracy, transforming the realities and conditions of prevailing inequality, inequity and exclusion. The document discusses, with the support of many authors related to the subject, the importance and meaning of critical democratic education for the formation of participatory and emancipating citizenship. This is done by analysing the issue of democratic schools within the conceptual framework of socio-community and liberalising education. The work consists of the following key parts: democracy as a foundation and way of life for building critical and revolutionary citizenship, democracy as a socio-cultural value, the school institution as an epicentre of democratic education and, finally, institutionalisation of democratic pedagogy and teaching, for which the tradition and experience of democratic schools is assumed.
