Le ‘chassé-croisé' des apparences sexuées : stratégie d'insertion professionnelle des cadres commerciaux

Abstract

`titrebThe “chassé-croisé” of gendered appearances: professional insertion strategies of commercial executives`/titrebIn spite of the existence of the French law of November 16, 2001 which states that “nobody can be excluded from a recruitment process [...] on the basis of their physical appearance”, the latter has, nevertheless, a value on the labour market. A survey carried out among final-year students aiming to become commercial executives shows these young people are more or less conscious of this value and during their studies develop strategies relating to the presentation of their appearance, intended to facilitate their professional insertion. Competition on the labour market can lead each to borrow, in a kind of “chassé-croisé” of appearances, the signs and distinctive attributes of the other sex.
