Abstract
The sung poetic improvisation of couplets is an element characteristic of the village of Olymbos (Karpathos island). This improvisation is practiced by the residents of the village, but also by the diaspora who is scattered in the world and comes back every summer. It is felt as a cultural identity marker. The glendi is a symbolic ritual for the residents, who strengthen the social cohesion of their village and a ritual of aggregation or incorporation for the diaspora. The music allows also to reaffirm the borders of the territory.
