Abstract
The saltworks of Bouteilles near Dieppe appeared before even the birth of the town on which they depended aferward. Situated by the river which brought salt water thanks to tides. They supplied the salt needed for the preservation of fishes captured in the area. The saltworks were used at first by the frankish kings, the by Norman dukes-kings to donate in abbeys or vassals. They became then an important revenus for the archbishops of Rouen, the Lords of Dieppe and Bouteilles since 1197. They began to meet diffficulties during Hundred Years War but it was the implementation of the salt tax upset the production by setting up a royal monopoly for the salt trade. The local production became more difficult because of the intense surveillance of king agents as the competition of salts outer the area became stronger.
