Observation of aggressive behaviour of hospitalised patients: between the need for early identification of aggressiveness, risks of stigmatisation and therapeutic demands

Free full text available

The lack of a clear definition of dangerousness and violence in psychiatry, as well as the general failure of prediction tools, must not interrupt the development of risk management in the institution. We propose the use of an aggressive behaviour observation scale which is largely based on the OAS (Overt Agression Scale) model developed by Yudofsky and its collaborators. The aim is to improve the quality of nursing observation and, in so doing, to use OAS as a multidisciplinary medium on the one hand and as a tool for communicating with the patient concerned on the other. Between trivialisation and stigmatisation, we remain attentive to the need for safety of healthcare workers and to the risks of exclusion of “disturbing” patients.
