Education for European Citizenship: educational proposal for implementation in the Social Science Curriculum

At present, citizenship faces a double challenge: on the one hand, there are factors that raise the question on the contents of acquired citizenship and, on other, new phenomena outline the necessity to enlarge the contents and to renew the citizenship in order to be adjusted new political and social realities. In this work, we try to carry out an approach to the concept of citizenship in the current context, its meaning, relevance and problems that it outlines, highlighting some of its new dimensions, as well as the feeling of belonging to this new reality (European identity). Finally, we do some concrete educational proposals for the formation in citizenship, organized throughout the development of new competences within the scope of the knowledge, the values, the attitudes and the abilities needed for its implementation in the Social Sciences curriculum.
