The actual EPS curriculum at primary school in the canton of Geneva: characteristics and determinants

Abstract

In defining a curriculum no longer as an absolute entity with intrinsic value but as a social construction, British sociologists broke with a vision of knowledge as neutral and universal. This study, whose point of view is external to the subject taught, focuses on defining the curriculum PE really develops in primary schools in Geneva, and the factors determining it. One hundred and forty-nine observation reports on PE lessons from 36 teachers have been analysed, in order to look for regularities in terms of structure and content. The results highlight a number of characteristics (APSA, pluri-activity for e.g.) and show the determinant role of the weekly PE schedule and of school level in the construction of the PE curriculum.
