Abstract

This paper has two main purposes. On the one hand,. to retrieve Rorty's thesis in "Human Rights, Rationality and Sentimentalism", according to which David Hume is best suited than Kant to think moral progress in contemporary world. And this is so for the Scottish philosopher argues that moral feeling, as corrected simpathy, —and not reason— is the fundamental moral competence that begets enlightment and civilization. On the other hand, the paper intends to find out in Hume's moral enquiry relevant moral keys to think solidarity, tolerance and participation in today's context.
