Abstract

International audience If there is one domain in which modernity meets Antiquity, it is the theatre of memory. The art of memory, discipline taught in ancient Greece and Rome and used by speakers to memorize their texts, consisted in mentally constructing theatres of memory. The theatres are mental representations of known places in which images of striking scenes are arranged in various locations. The function of these scenes and the objects represented is to activate language content in order to memorize speech without material support. These imaginary places enable to follow a mental path in order to retrieve elements of a text according to the directions taken from scene to scene. Today's digital documents allow us to move within linguistic contents with the help of spatial configurations that provide a plan of the information available. If this plan has a stable structure, it could constitute a theatre of memory which can be consulted on the screen rather than mentally. The principle is identical, but the storage is done by computer. Only the locations and the types of information stored are the responsibility of the user.
