Abstract

'pbThe hypermarket... beyond its obvious economic role, it has become the last place of diversity in our contemporary societies, a sort of (post-) modern market place. It is also the perfect reflection of the profound changes that call into question the economic sustainability and social utility of distributors. They look at this ‘producer of symbols’, which is the distributor combining the concepts of (co-) construction and expression of individual and family identities, ethnicity, subcultures, skills or even ideologies attached to the point of sale. As Eric Arnould points out in the preface: “Trade is a field of action and interpretation in which values, identities, roles, political and civic projects are expressed.” “There are many “weak signals” in this book. For researchers and managers to capture those who will open up new ways for the retail trade to escape from the “Big Middle” (Levy et al., 2005)”, explains Marc Filser in the postface. ‘/PB’ pbéritable research agenda to develop the cultural perspective of distribution, this book provides first and foremost ideas and actions for practitioners, who are encouraged to contact the authors’ team to continue the exchanges.’/PB
