Conflict of roles and voluntary commitment: the case of fire brigades

Abstract

International audience EnglishRole conflict and volunteer commitment: the case of firefightersThe aim of this study was to investigate the perception of commitment as a volunteer firefighter (SPV) in terms of conflict and / or enrichment of roles with (1) people not yet committed (aspirant or young firefighters) and (2) people engaged from varying durations (less than 3 years to over 10 years). The sample consisted of 286 people. The results show that, at or before the start of the engagement, the role of SPV is mainly seen as a help to get more recognition and a resource for family and leisure. With the lengthening of the duration of the commitment, the obstacles become more present, going with chosen or imposed objective constraints (marriage, children, employment). Practical implications of these findings are discussed.
