Número 104Mayo - Agosto 2002Nueva Serie Año XXXVISSN 0041 8633 LAS JÓVENES MEXICANAS: UN ESTUDIO GENERAL CON BASE EN EL INFORME DE MÉXICO PARA LA IV CONFERENCIA MUNDIAL SOBRE LA MUJER María de Montserrat PÉREZ CONTRERAS * On the basis of Mexico"s Report to the IV World"s Conference on Women, the author describes the current situation of women in Mexico, specially of young women. She points out the need to consider the gender perspective when statutes are passed by Congress, in view of achieving fairness and equality between men and women. In addition, the essay discusses the main constitutional and international instruments intended to achieve gender equality. Moreover, the author analyzes the fundamental rights of young women, such as the right to education, the right to work and the right to health, as well as their constitutional, legal and international regulation. Finally, she stresses the fact that both formal and informal education plays a very important role in the improvement of the condition of women in Mexico.
