Educational innovation with open eyes and no excuses: The challenges and opportunities of learning from experience

Abstract

Learning from your own experience is a technical and moral challenge. There is no learning process free from mistakes. These are, paradoxically enough, a source of experiences for learning key professional practices and methods, as long as we are capable of forgiving ourselves for carried out failures, to learn from them, and to remember them as an accurate chance to improve. This stresses the idea that no learning is possible without memory, without a happy memory. A professional of education must develop the habit of remembering even the hardest experiences, to learn from them all along his career. Permanent review of our teaching work is a fundamental practice to achieve excellence and innovation.However, people do not learn from all mistakes. Detecting the accident, the surprise in our practice, the challenges that a new reality raises, is a disciplined kind of work.Although the traditional practice is more comfortable and pleases institutions and authorities better, the duty of preparing students for the real world, for a life with failures and unknown and unexpected challenges makes innovation a more and more necessary practice, and drives people to go out and look for what is surprising and challenging. All in all, Pasteur affirms that chance, the blessed surprise only favors the well prepared mind.Facing the teaching task this way is the form to get to have a twenty-year rewarding experience rather than a one-year experience...repeated twenty times.The enemies of learning by experience are summoned and damned; Amnesia, Fantasia, Inertia and Nostalgia, and Learning by Experience Supporting Devices are called up. Essentially interactive, we find among them, videos, stories and comics, portfolios and case studies.The values that guide this teaching way are Honesty, Humbleness, Hope and something than should never get away from us, Sense of Humor.This ends up with a very powerful idea; without this discipline, without this type of attitude and values, innovating can be an irresponsible activity.
