Needs and support perceived by people with visual functional diversity in Sucre, Colombia

Abstract

The Association of Visually Impaired Sucre is the only entity that manages attention towards people with visual functional diversity in the department of Sucre, Colombia. In that sense, this study aimed to characterize the needs and supports perceived by this population affiliated to the association, in favor of their social inclusion. The qualitative approach and the method of critical theory were used. As a data collection technique, the semi-structured interview was used and these were analyzed under the inductive-deductive criterion with the support of the Atlas.ti qualitative data analysis software. As a result, in terms of support, participants only have the family and an adapted film program. They require investment in health, teacher training, educational and labor aid products, spaces for participation and recreation, pedagogy on functional diversity as well as promotion of their personal autonomy and independent living. In conclusion, there is ignorance of the needs of this population and lack of attention of State entities by not enforcing what is legally established, making deficiencies visible in all areas of daily life. The promotion and monitoring of public policies is suggested, as well as investment in the categories described.
