International audience The aim of this work is to clarify the significance of ‘Olvia’ character from the enlightened republican thinking point of view. With this in mind, we compare her to the other characters, we analyze her political role and her worth through the analysis of the tragedy purpose. The sole positive identification between Olvia, España and Numancia raises problems. Politically, Olvia is the counterexample of a good leader: she does not abide by the law, she is secretive and acts immorally, despite her good patriotic intentions. To compare Olvia to Numancia implies the exaltation of values contrary to the republican ideology.
