Alphonse Bertillon and anthropometry

Abstract

National audience The political instrumentalisation of knowledge and techniques in criminal or criminal matters is not a republican invention. It is the result of other schemes in other periods and places. However, the introduction of these arrangements is still interesting to study in the third Republic, since there is a new power in the form of a political system with specific ideology and traditions, the young third Republic advocates values of order, stability and work and is willing to do everything possible to enforce them. Crime is the best place to reflect the fears of a society on the move, and the modern man wants to try to control everything, control everything... It is against this background that the judicial anthropometry — invention of a man named Alphonse Bertillon — is a new weapon of a revolutionary repressive and technical policy, placing identification and identity at the heart of government policies and thus creating a spirit and principles that have never failed since then.
