Abstract
The study’s objective was to calculate the levels of physical activity through the percentage distribution according to gender and to determine the relationship between physical activity, basic psychological needs, motivation, and the intention to be physically active. Therefore, a descriptive cross-sectional study of a correlational type was carried out, with a sample of 309 Physical Education students (A= 14.23, SD= 1.79) from two educational institutions in Cañar. The results showed that both men and women, reached normal levels of physical activity, at the same time, it was clear that physical activity is positively correlated with psychological needs, these with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, integrated regulation, identified regulation and these in turn with the intention of being physically active. It is concluded that the degree of motivation can promote excellent levels of physical activity and consequently promote a future intention of sports practice in the students.
