France 2016: birth rate is decreasing

Abstract

The number of births fell by 4.5 % in France between 2014 and 2016, jointly driven by the decrease in the number of women of child-bearing age and the decline in the short-term fertility indicator: 1,97 child per woman in 2014, 1,89 in 2016. Such declines have also occurred in most developed countries, but the decline in France is smaller and later than elsewhere, presumably due to the social and family policies that have cushioned the shock of the crisis.
