The ethnic enclave paradox: Economic interpersonal and attempts to mobilise trade unions

Abstract

International audience Drawing on an ethnographic study on Chinese workers’ integration into the French trade union CGT (2009-2014), this article analyzes the shifting boundaries of the “community” through the constant negotiation of informal work, regularization, and resistance. Whereas the economic enclave facilitates the employment of migrant workers, it also sets back migrants’ incorporation into a trade union culture and hinders mobilization. Full collaboration with the trade union only occurs when regulation comes into play.
