Experience of the inclusion of ephemeral art in Madrid through regulated institutions. Madrid Open, 2004-2011

Abstract

The city of Madrid has in the last seven years experienced small trans temporary formations through the insertion of urban artistic performances in parallel to the ARCO contemporary art fair. As a result of this exhibition, an interesting initiative has emerged to bring the most recent artistic reflections to the streets. Starting with its location in a physical context directly linked to the fair, in principle, it moved to the streets representative of the city of Madrid and moved, as Madrid AOpen moved to less central neighbourhoods. The desire to make art more accessible to citizens, as well as the search for citizen/art interaction, has triggered over the years the emergence of projects increasingly involved in the physical and social space of Madrid. The trend in the evolution of the artistic project approach was clearly geared towards the intermediation of the artist as a catalyst for the citizen’s relationship with his city. The interventions shifted from purely artistic to serving as a place to meet and reflect on specific urban situations, raising more clearly the involvement of the neighbour in the projects through the study, in some cases, of real needs in specific neighbourhoods. The interest in the progress of the projects lies in the possible continuity of the actions, which are, in principle, presented as short-lived, when trying to work with the social space simultaneously with the physical space of the sites chosen. The assessment of the real effect of the interventions in recent years raises the hypothesis of the possibility of art as a transformer of public space, understood as a place of meeting and collective thinking.
