Abstract
Based on clinical practice and research, this article discusses parenthood in the case of cognitively impaired fathers and/or mothers. It emphasises that such parenting is negatively impacted by stigmatising public attitudes, the often narrow social networks of those concerned, and support methods whose norms are not readily understood and interpreted by the parents. In response to this, the article proposes to: 1) develop joint work between professionals’ norms and parents’ norms; 2) open out more to situations of co-parenting; 3) promote exchanges between parents with cognitive impairment and working alongside them to foster the development of experience sharing. The sharing of emotions, affects, dreams and nightmares should begin in childhood.
