Abstract

Rail culture has been a breeding ground for hegemonic masculinity in virtually all parts of the world. In Chile, for more than 160 years, the State Railways Company was set up in a secularised space in which, across all its branches, the categories of exclusive and closed masculinity were replicated. This article analyses the conditions of this gender building process in the company of the country’s most important state for territorial articulation and connectivity. Its importance is marked by its role as a model institution in forcible industrialisation from the middle of the 19th century to its decline at the end of the 20th century.
