Abstract
Published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, better known by the acronym « DSM » is needed as The instrument both in the world of scientific research in that of clinical practice. Since the first version from 1952 until today, the manual has undergone successive revisions. The recent publication on an official website of the draft of the forthcoming new version (DSM-V), announced for 2013, is an event called « historic » because it would finally clear the review process and thus open to the criticism of many, supposed to guarantee the democratic construction of a textbook still more rigorous. If the criticism is both lively and polemic in the Anglo-Saxon world, it was much more discreet in the French world, so that the manual is widely used and is undeniably an essential reference. The purpose of this paper is to lay the groundwork for a critical theory of the DSM, its design and development for a little bit in perspective its monopoly.
