Abstract
target. The article contains the findings of the first phase of an investigation carried out in the municipality of Candelaria (Valle del Cauca-Colombia), in agreement with the professional practice of the Psychology career of the University of San Buenaventura — Cali and the Fundación el Amparo I.P.S.. This study sought to identify the links between the forms of gestational care recommended by the official health system and those practised by pregnant workers attending the Foundation’s Prenatal Control Programme, based on their cultural beliefs. Method. In this first phase, a qualitative study was carried out, with five focal groups, two with health staff and three with 36 pregnant workers participating in the prenatal monitoring programme. Results. Cultural barriers to adherence to the prenatal control programme were found, related to beliefs, eating habits and assistance for interconsultations with some specialists. Conclusion. Emphasis is placed on the generation of educational processes within the Health System about the place of interculturalism and their consideration in the evaluation, intervention and support processes, in this case, of maternal — child care programmes.
