Aspects of the speaker’s voice within the meaning

Abstract

Three effects of the speaker’s voice inside meaning are considered in this study. They relate to the speaker’s voice, which is conceived as the responsibility of the speaker with respect for the words and sentences uttered. The speaker’s voice is conceived as a semanticopragmatic representation, distinct from the empiric person realising effective speech, as well as from the person represented by speaking of oneself. First, we consider the inner meaning (and often fictitious, imaginary) incarnation of the speaker’s voice in different enunciative games. We then examine other voices referred to by the speaker, independently from the content of their speech, through formal resemblance or similarity. The reference to a voice distinct from that of the speaker is considered in the second part of this study. A third part, concerns utterances consisting of speaking through another speaker’s voice, rather than about it. This last group of effects is intermediate between the two previous ones. The association of voice of another speech source incarnated by the speaker demonstrates the fluctuation of identities taken in speech. Not only is reported speech of various sorts concerned here, but also creative designations (such as proverbs, idioms, locutions) which support the views advocated here.
