The state of health of first-generation and second-generation migrants in France: Analysis by gender and origin

Abstract

Using data from the French Health, Health Care and Insurance survey, this study analyses health inequalies related to migration. The findings suggest health disparities between migrant population and French population, particularly stressed for migrants coming from North Africa. The magnitude of those inequalities is higher for first generation of migrants than for the second one. Those inequalities are also more important in women than in men. The poor health status of male migrants is mainly explained by their poor socio-economic conditions, their lack of social integration and their unhealthy life-styles, whereas migration seems to constitute a specific risk among women.Classification JEL : I12, J15, J16`np pagenum="1076"/b
